5 Steps To Clean Your RV Fresh Water Tank

5 Steps To Clean Your RV Fresh Water Tank

Cleaning your fresh water tank keeps the water in your RV safe to drink; luckily, tending to this chore is simple. Taking care of this part of the RV is vital as we use water for just about every daily function, from cooking and drinking to washing dishes. As industry experts, we here at RV Parts Center have compiled the steps to clean your RV fresh water tank to prevent bacteria growth.

Step 1: Drain the System

First things first: drain the tank of existing water. As you do this, it’s important that you turn the water heater off, as leaving it on could damage the water system. In addition, RV experts recommend you allow it to cool down before you start draining the system.

Step 2: Gather Cleaning Supplies

You can use either bleach or an RV tank cleaner to sanitize it. For every 16 gallons of water, you should use ¼ cup of your chosen cleaning solution. Mix the bleach with water before pouring it into the tank, as this will dilute it. Once you’ve mixed the two, use a funnel to pour it directly into the fresh water tank.

Step 3: Fill the Fresh Water Tank

Now that you’ve nearly completed the cleaning process, it’s time to add some fresh water to your cleaning solution, so fill the tank up with water. After filling the tank, turn on all faucets within the RV until you smell the cleaning solution. At this point, turn off the entire system so the solution can sanitize your tank.

Pro Tip

As you clean the system, you may notice an issue with your water tank. Shop for replacement RV parts, including an RV water holding tank, at RV Parts Center.

Step 4: Let It Sit

Most RV experts agree that you need to let the cleaning solution sit for about 12 hours. Since you can’t use the system during this time, it’s best to do it at night. Also, by allowing the solution to sit in the tank, you kill any bacteria inside.

Step 5: Drain the System Again

Now that you’ve allowed the cleaning solution to sit in your water system, you’ve got to flush it out so it’s once again safe to drink and use. Begin by draining the fresh water tank, then refilling it with fresh water. Allow this to run through your water system by turning on the faucets—leave them on until the smell of the cleaner vanishes.

Pro Tip

Sometimes, you’ll have to go through this step several times to eliminate the smell of bleach, but remember that doing this keeps the water safe to drink. Now is also the time to replace your water filters.

Your cleaning schedule depends on how often you use your RV. If you don’t go on RV adventures too often, twice a year should be sufficient; however, if you’re a frequent RVer, clean the water systems once a month. By following these steps to cleaning your RV fresh water tank, you keep the water safe for all passengers to drink as you enjoy the great outdoors!
